#2 Introductions Practice - Written Task 2

1.     Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?

The news article, “5 things to know about Brett Kavanaugh”, published by Fox News, discusses the positive sides of Kavanaugh, written under the context of the recent rape allegations directed towards him by women such as Christine Blasey Ford. This article utilizes media bias to convey Kavanaugh as being the victim in the trial as due to the strict select referencing of biographical information that would paint him as patriotic, and charitable. This is primarily done through media bias such as bias by diction and tone of which allows for a soft representation of the Supreme Court nominee that counters the opposition that describe him as villainous. Additionally, the use of appealing photos as well as bias through selection and omission contribute towards not only humanizing Kavanaugh to the public, but also does so in order to illustrate his high qualification for the particular role in government. In saying this, a bias perspective is shown where the news outlet has neglected issue at hand and instead focused on praising the accused in order to follow their own political agenda.

1.    How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose?

The opinion column, “Participation Trophies Send a Dangerous Message”, published by The New York Times explores the negative effect of participation trophies in modern society, whilst also giving brief comments on the ideology of today’s generation. The opinion piece achieves this by the use of bias by source control by the inclusion of the author’s own personal insight and relationship with the topic through the comfortable register and loose storyline format. Moreover, the author also employs diction in order to detail participation trophies as a refusal to accept society’s winners and losers, thereby further incorporating her own views. Furthermore, the use of bias by headline in the severity of the title sets an underlying tone for the rest of the essay that sets a negative initial approach in the reader’s mind towards the subject. With using these biases, it is clear that the author had used this genre to her own advantage in order to show a personal approach to the manner in order to create a sense of understanding and, perhaps, relatability.
