VISUAL LANGUAGE PRINT ADVERTISEMENT ANALYSIS

First of all, the overall component parts of the advertisement is Katy Perry dressed as a vampire appearing rather tempted to bite a bag of chips. There is no scenery, and the image itself is rather flat, all in effort to not draw any attention away from Perry and her bag of "PopChips". The advertisers had assured that Katy Perry was well lit (especially her face to capture her pale skin to further the "vampire costume"), yet also to assure the white of the chips bag really stands out against its bag. As with the tones, the colours of Perry are neutral so in her clothing and hair so that the audience's attention is mainly brought to her face (to notice the vampire teeth) and the bag of chips of which was purposefully placed close to the bag so the title "Bite Me" would make sense. This message is even further expressed as the advertisers use the colour red as the background not just to match the chip bag, but also remind the viewer of blood (a vampire's food), somewhat suggesting that this bag of chips is as irresistible as blood is to vampires (exaggerating it as survival food). When discussing the balance of elements, they were tactfully placed so that the audience can register quickly with what the theme of the ad is. For example, the title "Bite Me" is in bold and as large a font as Katy Perry herself, who occupies a majority of the image. This alone attracts the audience into wanting to read the smaller details, where a quote from Perry is below the title as she compliments the product. Any background images would distract from this title and make the text hard to read, so this choice of layout was well done. In terms of the contrast, assuring that Katy Perry's white face contrasted against the dark red as well as her dark attire was smartly done as this linked her face with the large white text above. As to her general posture and facial expression, Perry attempted to emulate the vibe of a vampire of which is seductive yet also animalistic (ergo, her open mouth, exposing fangs). This also explains why her eye contact is directly at the camera, as vampires are also written to be bold mythical creatures. As a final note, I think the inclusion of the quote under the large text is a suiting persuasive technique as it not only confirms that this product is something that Katy Perry eats and enjoys, but also acts as a magnet to her fans who wish to walk in her image (making the target audience a little less broad and instead more specific).
